Staff Analysis of the Legislation

This legislation requires that only professional structural engineers perform structural engineering in Georgia.

It is illegal for a county to build a structure involving structural engineering that could adversely affect or jeopardize the health, safety, or welfare of the public unless the plans and specification have been prepared under the direct supervision of a professional structural engineer, the plans and specifications bear the professional structrual engineer's seal, and the construction is under the direct supervision or review by the professional structural engineer for structures costing under $100,00.

Counties are required to keep permanent records of the building permit application and issuance that include the name of the professional structural engineer who sealed the plans, specification, reports and plat.

County elected officers who are professional structural engineers are exempt from the registration and other requirements for professional structural engineers while in office.
